P a r t i s - F o r t u n a by PrimalAce P a r t i s - F o r t u n a by PrimalAce
...shared fate.

Edit: Done more work on the shockwave to make it less flat and sharp looking. Thanks for the advice guys.

--

Its taken the longest time out of all my deviations to create this piece and every second of it was worth it. I'm incredibly proud of this and the time I've spent on it has really paid off. By far this is the best work of space art I've done to this day.

Hopefully the picture explains the theme for itself but just for clarity the systems star has created a horrific shockwave of energy as its being ripped apart by forces unknown. A super nova? An alien weapon? Only the inhabitants of the systems only life giving planet know, and that knowledge will die with them.

The largest planetary body in the picture is actually the third satellite of the inhabited planet. I was trying to create a very dynamic composition to emphisise the momentum of the shockwave. The other two satellites have already been hit by the showckwave and are in the process of seeding the universe with new raw material.

I hope you like what I've created. I've spent a long time on this in he hope that I might be able to get a few prints sold. Half the reason it took so long was because the picture is huge so that any prints would look outstanding! I'll probably be buying a print of this for myself, the very thought amuses me nontheless.

Details of the piece at 50% full size are here: [link]

Pictures of space.... kinda fill me with icy awe. And fire. Gah, curse me lack of money.

That is really well done. I know how difficult it is to create an explosion or shockwave, so 44 layers... that's interesting. I rarely finish with only 44 layers. Certainly speeds up working, because Photoshop won't use up that much memory.

Love the overall detail, but might I make a suggestion? Take out the asteroid(?) that appears to be racing towards the explosion; I assume it's suppose to be a collision? If so, it's not needed. I think it would be way more dramatic without and leaving the reason of the explosion to the imagination. Maybe just hadd a couple of larger planet fragments underneath the explosion layer(s). But... as I said; just a suggestion.

Great work nonetheless!

Well it was only a small part of the image that needed changing and while it could still be better (everything always can), it looks much better than it did before.

Thats pretty cool, the actual explosion is very nice, as is the composition give you the feeling of anticipation, those planets just looking at whats happened to their companion and knowing soon they will be next. My only problem is that shockwave it seems to soft maybe add a bit of white to the very edges that fades into the blue and blur it at the ends.
Apart from that, nice image, its nice to see more super nova images

Thanks, it was your Paradise Lost piece that inspired this. In the process of making the shockwave it had a much brighter edge but I must have lost that as I played with the colours afterwards. If theres anything I wan't 100% happy with it was the shockwave, so I might try and do what you said tonight.

I have had the same problem, start out with something bright then by the end its dull. But yeah out of the whole thing I'd say its probably the only aspect I'd change

Yeah, it is one of your best for sure, the planet textures are realistic and the colours used in the supernova really give it a sens eof eat and power.

Sheer awesomeness, marred only by the shockwave's seeming unfinishedness...

I'll let you in on a secret, I have no idea what to do with it! Once I got the blue stuff doing what I wanted I had no idea whether I should have added to it, or left it, and in the end decided the piece was busy enough as it is and left it as a clean knife like blade of a shockwave. Thanks for the comment ;)

Well saying it's like a knife-blade is a pretty good excuse, so I'll let it slide ;) I thought maybe you had just somehow forgotten about it :)

lol no Ia ctually pondered about possibly making it look, erm fat, but I just couldn't think up a good way to do it, and I also couldn't find any other artwork from which I could stea...find inspiration from. So it got left like that whilst I worked on the rest of the picture. Besides even in my description I never actually said what that shockwaves about anyway ;) lol

Actually I tell a lie, his work was all I could find on the subject and if you notice his piece about a supernova [link] is quite similar to my own with it being knife like, although I can't help but look at his pictures and just go wtf, how do I do that?!
